What MCP Changes for Your Placement Cell

For principals and placement officers

The management committee asks why a department's placement numbers are below last year. The honest answer most placement cells can give is that hiring is thin this season. It is usually true, and it is never enough, because it does not tell anyone what to do next.

The useful answer is more specific. Placement did not fall in general. It fell at a particular point. Students either stopped applying, or applied and failed assessments, or cleared assessments and lost interviews. Those are three different problems with three different fixes, and until you know which one you are looking at, any intervention is a guess.

That information is already in your records. Reaching it is the problem.

Why the data stays out of reach

Every placement platform ships dashboards, and most placement officers use two or three screens out of thirty. A dashboard assumes you already know which screen holds your answer. "Where did we lose them" is not a screen. It is four screens compared against each other, and by the time you have opened them all you have lost the afternoon.

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard that lets an AI assistant read a system directly. MySkillDB now supports it, so a placement officer can connect a tool like Claude or ChatGPT and ask a question in plain English. The answer comes back from your own college's student records, assessment scores and application data, within permissions the institution controls.

It is not a chatbot answering from general knowledge. It is your data, reached by asking instead of by clicking.

One department as an example

Take Mechanical, where core hiring is genuinely thin and every conversation starts from that assumption. The questions a placement cell should be able to answer in a minute:

  • How many of the outgoing batch are targeting core roles, how many IT and analytics, how many overseas employment
  • For the overseas group, who holds NEBOSH or IOSH, a valid passport, and a complete document set
  • Who has AutoCAD or SolidWorks readiness at the level this design trainee role specifies
  • Show apprenticeship track students separately from direct hire, since they report differently
  • Where the drop off sits this year: application, assessment, or interview conversion

The last one changes meetings. If students in a department are applying at half the rate of another despite comparable readiness scores, the problem is confidence and counselling, not a shortage of recruiters. That is a fix the college can execute this semester. Chasing more companies would have been the wrong response, and the expensive one.

The same shape of question works for any department. Only the skills and destinations change. A commerce batch raises different ones, starting with who in the batch is actually seeking placement rather than heading for professional exams or higher study.

Why heads of department care too

Programme accreditation is granted programme by programme. Each department's placement and progression numbers stand on their own regardless of how the others performed, and the head of department carries that file. These questions are theirs as much as the placement officer's.

Progression counts as well. Students going on to postgraduate study or overseas programmes contribute to outcomes, and departments routinely undercount them because the placement cell tracks jobs and nobody tracks the rest.

A note on student data

When an officer asks an assistant to read student records, that content is processed by the AI provider they have connected. Colleges should treat that as a real consideration.

Each connection is scoped to one institution and cannot read another college's students. Write access is limited to drafting, so the assistant can compose a report or a message but cannot publish anything or alter a student record. Every request is logged with the user, the institution, and what was accessed, and the college can see its own audit trail.

The test

Take the last question your management asked about placement. See how long your current system takes to answer it.

If the answer is more than a few minutes, the data is not the problem. The distance is.
